Comments from cyberspace...: Fredalba at the Viper Room

Fredalba

Comments from cyberspace...

12/15/2002

Viper Room, 12/14/02:

In a time when the rock/hip-hop fusion has started to feel played out through the tired wailing of bands that take themselves way too seriously, it's nice to FINALLY come across a band that places aggressive posturing aside and just delivers a solid show. And that's not to say that Fredalba's sound isn't in your face (and not backing down), but it's not a confrontation, it's an invitation to join into the fun that everyone on stage is obviously engaged in.

And that's what leads to the truly unique aspect of the show, that sense of joy and positivity flowing from the stage. The rock is there, the beats are there, the free-flowing rhyme is there but rather then delivering song after song about the need to break something, it's more about celebrating just being alive. Forget about dwelling on the lesser aspects of an unfulfilled life and getting all uppity and violent, one can't help but leave the show feeling good.

Did I mention the flute playing is incredible? Did I mention that flute is involved at all? Just one more piece that fits in to create a picture of a hopeful future where fun is the only point.

In summation, with war apparenlty around the corner and a seemingly endless array of other concerns and worries, it was nice to be a part of a show that allows you to experience a better side for a short time.
